Fortis-Uhren AG, headquartered in Grenchen, is a Swiss watch manufacturer. It is one of the few manufacturers that have consistently produced watches since its foundation. Ten years after the founding of the watchmaking factory, a collaboration with the English inventor and watchmaker John Harwood was established. In 1926 Fortis was able to present the first self-winding wristwatch (automatic watch) in series production (Harwood Automatic). The first chronographs followed in 1937. In 1969, long before the era of quartz and low-cost watches, Fortis launched the first plastic wristwatch. In 1962, the Spacematic automatic space clock was developed and designed to function smoothly under extreme conditions and temperature fluctuations. In 1998, Fortis presented the world's first automatic chronograph with a mechanical alarm. Fortis is today regarded as a specialist for pilot watches and space watches. Fortis has been the official supplier of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre since 1994. In 1997 the model "Official Cosmonauts Chronograph" on the Mir space station was worn by the cosmonauts. Today, the B-42 chronograph is the official watch of the Russian cosmonauts.
